PPA Chairman Pens Powerful Poker Article

February 5 - Capitol Hill's most prestigious publication, Roll Call, ran an interesting article this week, written by the Chairman of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), Alfonse D'Amato, where he calls for a legalized and regulated online poker industry in the United States. D'Amato, a former New York Senator, made some excellent points in favor of changing existing laws.

D'Amato said that the current Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has left millions of American consumers vulnerable due to the lack of effort to regulate instead of ban the activity outright. He also said that billions of dollars in tax revenue have literally slipped through the government's fingers due to the same policy.

"The government should step up and exercise control over the multi billion dollar activity and respect the rights of the estimated 15 million (and 100 million worldwide) who play and collect the revenue," said D'Amato.

D'Amato pointed out the reasons why the UIGEA is failing as a law that is meant to protect US consumers. "As Conservative columnist George Will aptly pointed out, laws that attempt to block internet poker are 'Prohibition 2.0' and, as Mr. Will explains, history has shown that prohibitions do not work. Rather, they exacerbate and even create problems, especially among vulnerable communities, by driving the prohibited community underground where unscrupulous operators can easily, and without fear of prosecution, take advantage of consumers for their own gain."

The PPA Chairman's article in Roll Call made some powerful points, especially towards the end where D'Amato writes: "If Obama applies his poker skills to his job in the White House, he will reject politically unpopular and economically untenable tax increases and look seriously at other potential revenue streams like internet poker."
