PPA Launches National Poker Week
|
June 30 - In a bid to keep the poker issue in the forefront of the public's mind, the Poker Player's Alliance (PPA) announced the launching of National Poker Week next month.
The event, to coincide with the World Series of Poker, will run from July 19th to 25th and was announced by the chairman of the PPA, former senator Alphonse D'Amato.
"Our members - the poker players of America - are our best advocates to protect the future of poker," said D'Amato. "National Poker Week, with events in Washington, DC and across the country, is the PPA's way to make it clear to my former colleagues in the US Congress that poker is important to voters and is here to stay."
The PPA enjoys the following of over one million faithful poker players as members, who are pushing as a unit for the United States to adopt a regulated and legalized poker industry.
The group steadily and diligently pressures lawmakers to support poker legislation and allow the game to enjoy regulated status.
It is believed that up to 10 million Americans play poker online and a regulated industry will not only benefit them, but also bring in much needed money to the US government in way of taxation and licensing fees.
A number of top players will participate in National Poker Week, including Annie Duke, Dennis Philips and Howard Lederer. The latter said in a statement: "Protecting Americans' right to play poker - whether online or around the poker table - is something everyone should support even if you don't play. Restricting what we can do online in the privacy of our own home is a slippery slope, which is why I am coming to Washington for National Poker Week - to tell my members of Congress to protect my rights."
Other events planned include the submitting of videos where members tell of their personal poker stories, as well as various outreach programs to the media.
