PPA Lends Support to New Online Poker Bill

October 3 - New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez is gaining support for his newly proposed S3616 - a bill that calls for the regulation and licensing of online poker companies in the United States.

The online poker bill S3616, also known as the Internet Skill Game Licensing and Control Act of 2008, defines internet skill games as an "internet based skill game that uses simulated cards, dice or dice in which success is predominantly determined by the success of the players, including poker, bridge and mahjong."

According to the proposed online poker bill, the authorities would investigate each and every license application to its core, looking at the site's owners, compliance with the law under foreign gambling jurisdictions and financial holdings. Only after a thorough investigation will site operators be granted a license in the United States.

The S3616 calls for licensed poker sites to be monitored constantly to ensure that they uphold the standards set.

The bill has been acclaimed by a number of interest groups including the Poker Players Alliance. "This is really a bill that poker players could love," said the Executive Chairman of PPA, Johan Pappas. "It's written to directly help the online poker playing community to establish licensed and regulated poker in the US. We believe there is a great market for the next Congress and the new administration."

The Poker Players Alliance was physically active in helping Senator Menendez draft the S3616 by providing assistance with the wording and helping the politician understand exactly what player are demanding.

"One of the things that Senator Menendez really gravitated to is the fact that, under the current environment, consumers aren't getting the protection that they deserve, and he wanted to introduce a bill that would provide a regulatory framework that protected the US consumers from fraud and abuse, and also to ensure that that children don't get access to the websites and to protect problem gamblers as well," explained Pappas.
