October 13 - Father Andrew Trapp, a young priest at St. Michael Catholic
Church in Garden City Beach, entered the
PokerStars Million Dollar
Challenge televised game show with one thing in mind - to make as much money as
he could for his church's building fund.
Trapp managed to earn a seat in the televised poker game after winning an
online tournament at PokerStars.
His other requirement was to send an audition tape to the show's producers
describing why he wanted to enter the Million Dollar Challenge.
After receiving the green light, Father Trapp flew to Los Angeles to tape the
show and this week it was revealed that he had won $100,000 for his church.
This is also not the end of the road for Trapp, as he'll appear on the show
again in December - this time aiming for the one million dollar prize.
"I'm going to give every cent I win to the church," vowed Father Trapp,
explaining that the congregation is badly in need of a new building in which to
pray.
"It's very much a temporary structure," he explained of the existing
building. "It's not adequate for our current needs. It's not big enough,
especially during the tourist season and during the winter months when a lot of
the snow birds as they come back from up north."
When asked how playing online poker tournaments fits his image as a
God-fearing man, Father Trapp said that the Catholic Church believes that
gambling in moderation is acceptable.
"The Catholic Church teaches that there's nothing morally wrong making a bet
or games of chance," he said.
