August 3 - As the 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event continues towards
its exciting finale, the remaining players are even more motivated to win as
this year's WSOP champion will take home a record-breaking
$12 million first prize.
This is the largest top prize of any poker event in the history of the game,
with the total prize pool this year at the prestigious Las Vegas event reaching
an impressive $83.5 million from almost 8 800 entrants.
Last year's World Series of Poker attracted just over 5600 players.
Said WSOP commissioner, Jeffrey Pollack, 'This year's World Series of Poker
stands out as the best in the tournament's illustrious 37-year history because
never before have so many people from all over the world competed for so much
prize money and the honor of winning the most coveted prize in all of poker -
the World Series of Poker champion's bracelet.'
Also, in a first for the WSOP, the top 12 finishers will each receive at least $1
million, even players who do not reached the final table. The top 873 players in
the WSOP Main Event will all go home with winnings, with the player in 873rd place
receiving $14,597.
The top 12 payout are as follows:
1st place - $12 million
2nd place - $6.1 million
3rd place - $4.1 million
4th place - $3.6 million
5th place - $3.2 million
6th place - $2.8 million
7th place - $2.3 million
8th place - $1.9 million
9th place - $1.5 million
10th place - $1.1 million
11th place - $1.1 million
12th place - $1.1 million
