RGA Expresses Confidence over Future of European Poker

December 15 - According to the Chief Executive of the Remote Gambling Association (RGA), Clive Hawkswood, the new gambling laws introduced by the Norwegian government, will not be able to impact the popularity and rising success of online poker in Europe.

On Friday, Norway passed a law that is strikingly similar to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that was introduced in the United States two years ago. As with the case of the UIGEA, the new Norwegian anti gambling laws would make it illegal for financial transactions to transfer money to and from online gambling sites.

Nevertheless, the Remote Gaming Association, a group that represents some of the most powerful gambling groups in Europe such as Bet 356, William Hill, Ladbrokes, Playtech and Paddy Power, predicted that the law would be practically impossible to enforce because of the ambiguity of its wording - very much like the UIGEA.

Clive Hawkwood expressed his confidence that the new Norwegian laws would not affect online poker in Europe, just as the UIGEA was not able to stamp out online poker in the United States. "Irrespective of all this, poker continues to be a real favorite among European gamblers and we are sure that sector of the market will continue to grow for the foreseeable future," he said.

The Remote Gaming Association has already lodged a formal complaint with the European Surveillance Agency over the new Norwegian law.

Hawkswood pointed out that Norway is set to hit the election polls in the coming year and that "implementation could be delayed or cancelled because of that, especially if a new government took over."
