Sam Farha - Poker Legend
|
Perhaps no other poker pro looks the part as much as Sammy Farha. Farha is one of the best short-handed pot limit poker players in the world, excelling at Omaha to such an extent that the other big name players are hesitant to play against him at that poker game. But it is his memorable second place finish at the World Series of Poker 2003 main event for which Sam Farha is best known.
Granted, he finished second to a poker palooka in Chris Moneymaker, a player who is likely to be back doing taxes in Tennessee five years from now, but Farha emerged from that battle as a ferocious poker player with plenty of guile and ability. Hold'em is one of Farha's weaker games, probably because he is by nature a gambler willing to take huge risks, hence pot-limit Omaha suits him down to the ground.
Sam Farha was born in Lebanon and moved to the United States to attend college. In Beirut he was well known as one of the best pinball, pool, and Pacman players in the country, and used to make a lot of money from those games. This is a fairly typical background for a lot of professional poker players, many of whom started out hustling pool or other games.
Farha is known to be extremely aggressive, unpredictable, and generally fearless at the poker table. He looks like he's trying out for the Rat Pack circa 1957 with his permanently unlit cigarette dangling from his mouth and his lounge-suit and slicked back 'do. He has a style and a personality unique in poker, and it certainly works for him. The Sammy Farha poker legend grows with every appearance on ESPN, and few poker players are as well known to the general public.
