The Keys To Online Poker Success
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
January 13 - Understanding the fundamental mechanics of poker can only take you so far. You need to know the maths that underpins poker but it won't be enough to make you a winner. You need to understand the psychology of gambling as well, but that won't make you a winner either.
This is where most online poker strategies stop: knowing the odds combined with a fearless mentality. You can't be afraid to lose, you need to get your money in with the best hand (or draws), you have to play at levels where you feel comfortable. I am assuming you know all of this but you're still not winning overall, or winning enough from poker.
I win at poker, and for me it comes down to other factors that most poker writers don't discuss. The keys are: patience, confidence, and acknowledging the limitations of both your game and the game of poker itself.
The last point is crucial. Poker is a game of some skill but it is also a game of luck. It is a game where a bad decision can later be rewarded and an initial good decision can turn very bad. Poker is not perfect, and the only players who react emotionally at the poker table are those people who have failed to grasp this point.
Let's say player A raises with QQ and player B calls with 72. The first player made a good decision and the second player made a poor decision. If the flop comes J-3-2 and the same raise/call sequence occurs we would probably feel that player B has compounded that error.
But in no-limit cash games you see this type of play all the time, mainly because if the gamble pays off the payout is greater than the risk. If the turn comes a 2 and the QQ bets only to be raised all-in then that player faces a new challenge.
If the Queens call then Player A has made a bad decision and the previous sequence is now irrelevant. To remind yourself that you were ahead is pointless. If the river is a Q you'll feel justified and think you played it brilliantly. If you fail to get that Q you'll feel that a terrible bad beat has taken place, but all that's happened is that you have failed to realize that poker is a fluid game where every hand features constant shifting of the odds.
Most successful poker players believe in their game. They come to the table confident that they are going to win, and if they lose they do not let that impact their attitude. The same players also possess a great deal of patience, within the game and in their overall view of what it means to play poker.
