The True Cost Of Playing Tournament Poker Like A Pro
|
So you fancy yourself a professional poker player, and that means you want to compete in every World Poker Tour, World Series Of Poker, and WSOP Circuit event on the calendar. In 2005, entering all the biggest poker tournaments in the world would have set you back an initial investment of $355,550 in tournament buy-ins alone!
That amount does not include your expenses along the way, including travel, hotels, and meals. It seems fair to say that you need a bankroll of $500,000 in order to play on the tournament poker circuit for a year. Obviously most poker pros do not play in every single event, but a lot of them did compete in all the World Series Of Poker tournaments held in Las Vegas last year, and that alone cost over $100,000 in buy-ins.
The money you need to enter pales in comparison to the amount of money that was up for grabs. Those tournaments paid out a monster total prize pool of $187 million! All you need is one first place finish and you're set for....well for a year or two at least. But just ask Chris Moneymaker how long that one big hit lasts, and you might be surprised by the answer!
