US Online Poker Fans Foolishly Optimistic

November 13 - Industry leaders in the United States are being cautiously optimistic that USA online poker is on the road to legalization, following last Tuesday's US elections. They believe that Barack Obama will not stand in the way of plans to allow poker to be declared a game of skill and thus have it become a legal and profitable pastime.

The latest executive to show optimism for the online poker industry was the chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Harrah's Entertainment, Gary Loveman, who said that the chances of legalizing internet poker were "pretty good".

Lovemen was speaking on a conference call following comments on the company's third quarter earnings last week.

When asked why he believed online poker had a good chance to see the light of day under the new government, he said that it was not so much about the fact that more Democrats had been added to Congress, but more about the fact that nobody dealing with these issues at a high level in the new government was "violently opposed to this process".

Nevertheless, Loveman remained pessimistic about the immediate future of other forms of internet gambling and the possibility of them being legalized under the Obama government.

Online poker took a near fatal blow when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was passed in 2006, forcing many of the top poker sites to close their doors to US players.

Gambling proponent groups have continued to fight for the recognition of poker as a game of skill, showing that the game requires more skill than chance and should therefore not be included under the laws of the UIGEA.

Many feel that with a Democratic majority in Congress, there is more chance than ever of things starting to change for online poker in the US.
