USA Friendly Online Poker Rooms

Author: Marc Weinberg

October 24 - A lot of publicly listed online poker companies have been forced to turn away American players, but there are still a lot of US poker rooms out there. I thought it would be useful to provide a short list of what I think are the best USA-friendly poker rooms online.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but rather based on my personal experience of good online poker rooms that I have played at, and that American residents can still play at. The online gambling industry remains in flux, to put it mildly, so although this list is accurate as of today it could well change in the future.

Those caveats aside here are my top five poker rooms for USA players:

1. Poker Stars:

With the sudden and rather pitiful capitulation of Party Poker the stage is set for Poker Stars to become a truly massive poker room, especially for guaranteed tournaments where I expect nothing short of bedlam in terms of registration levels. Will Poker Stars remain USA-friendly? It's tough because they are well known, which means their executives will surely be on the DOJ list, but they may stick it out.

2. Full Tilt Poker:

This is one online poker room that seems blithely unaware of the legislation, or to put it more accurately have chosen to ignore the legislation. They're acting as though it's business as usual and will become a huge cash game room. This despite the fact that their owners and stakeholders LIVE in the USA. They're the canaries down the mineshaft for me - if they're not arrested then no one will be arrested and they'll look like geniuses for calling the administration's bluff. Even if they do go down or ultimately change their tune you have to admire their brass balls response.

3. Absolute Poker:

Absolute is in a pretty good position here as a middle-range, decent poker room that is well known to serious players but has a low public profile. Absolute Poker can, therefore, go about their business and continue to offer a good if unspectacular product to USA players, particularly college kids who love this site. Look for them to thrive in this new climate.

4. Bodog Poker:

As an offshore sportsbook, casino, and poker room (in that order) Bodog is not going anywhere and I expect them to remain a USA-facing company. In fact they're still advertising their online poker room on US TV channels, so that gives you an idea of their policy regarding the Bill. The independent poker rooms suffer from lower player volumes and less stable software, but at least you can still play there - so while I've had a couple of iffy experiences with Bodog Poker there's no way I'm closing my account with them any time soon!

5. Doyles Room:

I have a soft spot for Doyles Room since I won my WSOP Main Event satellite there, and they seem intent on staying "loyal to the USA" as they put it. The site is represented by a poker player who has spent decades playing in back-room poker games that were not exactly legal, so if Doyle Brunson quits this fight you can bet that he'll be the last man to drop. Doyles Room offers cool promotional tournaments that I enjoy and recommend like their Bounty events, and the software is excellent as well.
