World Championship Of Online Poker Off To A Flyer

PokerStars.com Launch Moneymaker Millionaire Tourney

September 18 - If you were wondering whether online poker was stagnating, doubting that poker could maintain its spectacular recent growth, or concerned about the impact of recent attempts by the American authorities to demonize online gambling, the first event of the WCOOP at Poker Stars should allay all those fears.

Online poker is alive and well. In fact it is a monster that is still in the process of expanding to gargantuan proportions. The World Championship Of Online Poker is an 18-event extravaganza that will draw all the top poker players in the world, and the first event was an incredible success.

Event #1 took place on Saturday, September 17 and it was Razz - one of the less popular poker games that used to be a specialist event. Poker Stars implemented a $100,000 guarantee for the tourney but there was absolutely no need because a whopping 1297 entrants showed up and paid the $200 + $15 entry fee.

There was a total prize pool of $259,400 for an online Razz tournament. Unbelievable numbers, and there is every reason to assume that the big no-limit events will draw record-breaking numbers as well.

136 players cashed in the first event, including Joe Hachem who finished 60th after threatening to go even deeper. He once again proved that he is a true world champion. Hachem will supposedly play in all 18 WCOOP events this year, which is great to see. Greg Raymer was a little unlucky to get knocked out on the bubble. Chris Moneymaker played as well, for what that's worth. He didn't make it anywhere near the bubble, but that should come as no big suprise to anyone who has followed his bumbling career since winning the 2003 WSOP.

The winner of the tournament was a player named Nabokov. That's not me by the way, even though my username is Nabokov at a lot of online poker rooms. Nice to see my Doppelgangers are thriving!

Nabokov pocketed over $58,000 for the win and also won the first 2006 WCOOP bracelet for his troubles.
