August 28 - After being landed with a lawsuit filed by seven top poker
professionals, the World Poker Tour (WPT) has answered back by retaining a
hotshot lawyer from one of the best law firms in Washington DC to fight its
case.
The WPT has retained the services of well-known anti-trust lawyer, Makan
Delrahim of Brownstein, Hyatt and Farber, and been quoted as saying that they are
'disappointed' at the actions taken by the players and that the lawsuit is both
'without merit and misleading'.
The seven highly-rated poker players, including Joseph Hachem, Howard Lederer,
Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson and Greg Raymer, filed the lawsuit against the World
Poker Tour last month for 'anti-trust violations' amongst other reasons.
It seems the players are suing the World Poker Tour for allegedly infringing
upon their rights to associate commercially with other poker brands and online
poker operations as they see fit.
In a 22-page response, the World Poker Tour 'turned the tables' against the
seven plaintiffs by saying that the players' association with online poker rooms
is putting the WPT at risk because of the controversy currently surrounding
the legality of online gambling in the United States.
