World Series Of Poker Main Event Stats and Stories
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
I'm addicted to the television coverage of the Main Event at this year's World Series Of Poker. Watching clowns like Tiffany Williamson bumble and stumble their way to fortunes; listening to Mike Matusow and Phill Hellmuth heckle their way into the spleens of TV viewers everywhere; waiting for the hands that you just know were chosen for shock value and pure entertainment - it's a spectacle you have to see. But here are some stats and tales from this year's main event that are worth reading:
There were 5,661 registered entrants, that is to say players who ponied up the $10k, or had it ponied up on their behalf. Remember that all the online poker rooms that gave away thousands of seats for this event had pretty strict terms and conditions. You couldn't transfer your seat, or refund it for cash, for example.
There were only 5,619 actual players who sat down. That means there are 42 hard-luck stories that would make for great television all by themselves, at least if you're into watching the misfortune of others (German television stations will surely be interered, no?)
13 registered players had the misfortune of losing their buy-in money along the way.
10 registered players were turned away because they were under-age and had qualified online under false pretences. Good riddance to those freshman punks, I say. Nothing is more annoying than an eighteen-year-old opponent, except for possibly a ninety-year-old opponent.
2 registered players who won online satellites to the main event DIED before the world series of poker main event got underway. How brutally unlucky is that? You win a one in a thousand shot by qualifiying online - bet you feel that someone up there was smiling on you. Wrong, buddy! That was merely the suppression of evil laughter that looked like a smile. How cruel of the gods.
