World Series of Poker to Ban Poker Site Ads
|
February 23 - Following the massive 'crackdown' by the US government on online
gambling, organizers of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) have announced that
they will no longer allow advertising of online poker websites.
In recent years, Harrah's Entertainment, organizers of the WSOP, have welcomed
online poker site advertising, possibly because much of the growing interest in
land poker events has been generated by the huge growth of online poker rooms.
However, with US authorities increasingly clamping down on online gambling in
all forms, including online poker, executives at Harrah's Entertainment took a 'safe' decision to ban all advertising and logos for 'real-money' online poker rooms.
Said WSOP spokesperson, Gary Thompson, 'Harrah's has banned all advertising for
.net sites that are affiliated with real-money online poker rooms,
particularly those still accepting US-based players, such as PokerStars and Full
Tilt Poker.
'However, player-promotional and media-related sites will still be allowed to
advertise their .net addresses, ' he said.
A fully licensed casino group in the United States spanning over a dozen
gambling jurisdictions abroad and at home, Harrah's Entertainment has an
obligation to follow guidelines as set down by federal law and gambling
regulators.
'We are hoping to post the 2007 WSOP rules and registration procedures on our
official website next week concerning clothing and accessories that players can
and cannot wear containing .net logos,' said Thompson.
