May 9 - Julien Nuijten is not your ordinary teenager. This nineteen
year old has already been crowned champion of one of the industry's newest and
most exciting poker tournaments - the Latin American Poker Tour, that took
place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week.
This was the first official Latin American Poker Tour and was certainly the
largest poker tournament ever to be held on the South American continent - a
sign of the growing popularity of poker in this part of the world.
Nuijten travelled from his native Amsterdam in the Netherlands to take part
in the Latin American Poker Tour and entered the main table with a distinct chip
advantage. In fact he had a two to one chip lead over the player with the second
highest number of chips, Vitaly Kovyazin.
The main table event had all players slowly eliminated until the game was
left to be played out between Nuijten and Kovyazin. In the end, Nuijten managed
to beat 314 other opponents to take home the grand first prize of $222,940.
Kovyazin earned himself $117,750 for his superb efforts.
The final table results, from highest to lowest, were as follows: Julien
Nuijten, Vitaly Kovyazin, Nikolai Senninger, Alex Brennes, Eduardo Henriques,
Oliver Kugler, Rafael Pardo, Juan Carlos Burguillos, Severin Walser.
Nuijten is not new to competitive online gaming. He is a firm fan of the
online Magic: The Gathering card game that has taken the world by storm, and was
actually crowned World Champion of Magic at the tender age of fifteen. Other
professional players such as Dario Minieri, David Williams and Noah Boeken, all
made a successful transition from the world of Magic to poker, and have never
looked back.
Nuijten said the most of his poker practice is obtained by playing high stake
cash games online.
