Zynga Online Poker Hacker Gets Prison Sentence

Author: Marc W

March 21 - A hacker who made his way into the system at Zynga Poker and stole 400 billion gaming chips, has been given a prison sentence.

The 29 year old UK citizen, Ashley Mitchell, stole chips that were worth GBP 7.4 million in real money, and sold around a third of them for GBP 53,612 on the black market.

Zynga Poker started getting suspicious after chips began disappearing in 2009.

Initial suspicions turned to two of the company's employees, although it was later determined that Mitchell had gained access to the system using their identities.

Mitchell finally tripped up when he used his own Facebook profile to get into the system and the true identity of the thief was discovered.

The presiding judge in this case, Philip Wassal said: "The dishonesty in this case was substantial and protracted. Online security is a priority for everyone these days."

"From internet banking to major international transactions, people rely on the security of systems and anyone who comes before the courts who has gone through these security systems from their own ends can expect custody."

Mitchell was given a two year prison term by the judge.

"The sentence has to reflect the impact on public confidence in security systems and online business when someone breaches security in this way," said Judge Wassal.

This is not the first time that Mitchell has misused computers to commit a crime, and he was serving a 40 week suspended sentence for hacking in 2008.

Apparently when he gets out of jail the job of poker manager at Ultimate Bet or Absolute Poker is his - hey I put the zing in Zynga!
