The Best Poker Players Of 2006
|
05 January 2007
It was a great year for high-stakes poker. Will it be repeated is a legitimate question but for now let`s look back and salute the best tournament players who made a huge impact in 2006.
Top of my list would have to be David "Chip" Reese. A recent best-of list at a rival site that shall remain nameless although it is often in the news one might say, failed to mention Reese in their Top 9! Ludicrous. First of all Reese has been acknowledged as amongst the best to ever play the game by those who play poker at the highest level. After winning the biggest buy-in tournament in the history of the WSOP he has emphasised that ranking.
Chip won the $50,000 buy-in HORSE event at the World Series and he did so by beating the best final table I have seen at any poker tournament. This was the one that everyone wanted to win to prove that they were truly the best. But only Reese came through and delivered during an epic final clash with Andy Bloch.
Second on my list is Joe Hachem. I played in the Main Event at the WSOP and it was incredibly tough to finish in the top 1000 never mind work your way to the top 250 in defense of your title when everyone is gunning to knock you out. Hachem did this and cashed in several times besides in preliminary events. He very nearly won another bracelet, losing to former mental patient Dutch Boyd in a close run thing.
He then ended the year in amazing fashion (Hachem not Boyd) by winning the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio at the end of the year. That final table included Daniel Negreanu and the field included everyone else who matters in the world of professional poker.
Hachem is the best player to win the WSOP world championship in the last 4 years, Greg Raymer (respect to him) included. Chris Moneymaker is last on that list with Jamie Gold only slightly in front until he proves otherwise. But hey, they`ve all won the Main Event and we haven`t.
Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi rounds out my top three because he was the most consistent tournament player all year long. His results, especially early in the year, were astounding, and he is a fantastic player. He deservedly won the Poker Player of the Year title for 2006 in terms of his overall poker record. Honorable mention to Jeff Madsen and Bill Chen for winning multiple WSOP bracelets in 2006, and a nod to Phil Hellmuth Jr. who showed us all that he was far from washed up.
