US Online Poker Market Still Largest in World
|
08 August 2009
August 8 - If the US authorities thought that they had managed to wipe out online poker from the country, they will need to take a long, hard look at the latest statistics to understand that nothing could be further from the truth.
According to research conducted by the Poker Players Research, the United States still has the strongest and most thriving online poker industry in the world, with a staggering 10 million people playing the game on the internet on a regular basis for real money.
The US poker market is so strong that its numbers are five times more than the second largest market in the world, the United Kingdom, which boasts a player market of `only` 1.9 million real money players.
The statistics are particularly interesting in light of the fact that the US authorities have done all they can to continue with their policy of Prohibition, since the introduction of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006.
From slamming multi million dollar lawsuits on companies daring to engage in gambling activities in the country, to physically confiscating money ear marked for US poker player payouts from bank accounts, the US government has stopped at nothing.
Yet the spirit of poker lives on and the latest numbers show just how determined poker players are to have their fun online.
The third largest poker market was recorded in Germany (1.6 million players), followed by France (1.3 million). The total Scandinavian market (incorporating countries such as Sweden and Norway) total 1.4 million players altogether.
