888 Signs Lucrative Poker Deal with Harrahs
|
Author: Marc
September 14 - In a move that promises to bring the World Series of Poker Brand and Caesars Casino brands online, 888 Holdings announced a lucrative deal signed with Harrah's Interactive Entertainment.
Harrah's, one of the land gaming world's largest and more powerful gambling groups, is hoping to enter the ever growing online market and recently set up its interactive division.
The group sought a partner that would be able to provide its successful brands with an online platform and the details of the new deal were announced this weekend.
888's business to business unit, Dragonfish, will thus provide an online platform, including banking and support, to the two brands.
The Communications Director for WSOP, Seth Palansky, said: "The intent is to be in the online gaming space, wherever it's legal. We've partnered with 888 to develop a platform."
Some observers have voiced their concerns that the new deal may come into conflict with the live sponsors of WSOP events such as Betfair Poker and Everest Poker.
However Seth Palansky tried to play the issue down. "I really don't think there's anything for anybody to worry about," he reassured. "The WSOP will remain a premier live poker destination. Our offline events are great opportunities for our sponsors."
"If all this goes through and we develop an online gaming site, then we would be competing in some of the same markets. We would still have relationships with the other sites, however."
Palansky pointed out that Harrah's has been eyeing the online poker market for some time now and expressed his hope that the US government would recognize that the industry can be legalized, regulated and taxed to bring maximum benefit to all involved.
You might recall that Harrahs was instrumental in getting UIGEA passed - they paid large contributions to the coffers of then Senator Bill Frist, and he was the man behind the anti online gambling bill. But we have to forgive Harrahs for that because they were in the midst of being bought out, and the little move they orchestrated with UIGEA raised their value by over $1 billion at the time. Now they're the biggest fans of online poker - you gotta love capitalism!
