Berlin EPT Robbery Makes Online Poker Look Safe

 March 9 - Online poker has its share of problems, including but not limited to playing against bots, colluders, imbeciles, and players vastly superior to you (yes, I am talking about you Patrik Antonious) but at least you cannot get chopped into pieces by a machete-wielding German, or at the very least such an event would be a one-outer.
Not so if you were lucky or wealthy enough to play in the latest EPT event in Berlin. Held at the unprotected Berlin Grand Hyatt, where the security team was not armed - I tell you this couldn't have happened in Berlin 70 years ago - the wheelbarrow of cash (estimated at anywhere between 800,000 Euros and 1 million) usually reserved for the final two poker players in the tournament was instead gifted to thieves in masks.
No one was seriously hurt, although if you watch the video you can see that poker players win no awards for actual bravery in the face of possible physical harm. There is practically a stampede with elbows flying as poker pros use up years of stored energy in an impressive single burst of cowardice.
The best moment of the Berlin EPT event is undoubtedly when a security guard captures one of the robbers, on camera no less, but is then forced to let him go when the other robbers return with weapons and threaten him. The fact that it is all in German just makes it sound even more deadly and dangerous.
German police are confident of capturing the criminals. Early reports that they also built the software used on Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker could not be confirmed.
