Pro Poker Court Rulings on a Roll

Author: Renee

January 29 - The Poker Players Association had a strong hand in the positive outcome of a recent poker court case in Colorado, which saw the judge rule that poker is a game of skill. The judge said that Kevin Riley could not be found guilty for illegal gambling because he operated a poker league.

The Poker Players Association paid for the services of Professor Robert Hannum, an expert on statistics from the University of Denver, who was successful in proving to the courtroom that poker is indeed a game of skill and does not rely on an element of chance to determine whether a player wins or not.

The PPA stepped in as part of a litigation network offered to paying members that will provide legal counsel in cases relating to poker should the need arise.

"The PPA is pleased with the outcome of this case," said the group's State Director for Colorado, Gary Reed. "It is further confirmation that poker is a game of skill, not chance. At the same time, the not guilty verdict cements the rights of Colorado citizens to enjoy the American pastime of poker and will allow law enforcement to use its scarce resources to investigate real unlawful activity in the state, not poker games".

Last week, a Pennsylvania judge ruled that a couple could not be found guilty of illegal gambling by operating poker games in their home, as poker is a game of skill and thus does not constitute gambling.

The PPA and other interest groups are hopeful that the two cases, together with the recent ruling by the Kentucky Appeals Court to throw out Governor Steve Beshear's request to take over the domain names of 141 gambling sites, will set a precedent for national legislation changes.
