True Power Of The PPA On The Line
|
Author: Renee
May 13 - Nobody is denying that the Poker Players Alliance is one of the most vocal and influential pro-gambling groups in the United States. Whenever the issue of online gambling is brought into the forefront or makes headlines, you are always sure to see the PPA head, the former Senator Alfonse D'Amato being quoted for his comments.
But while the 1 million member strong group certainly wields some clout, how effective will it actually be when it comes to the real crunch - its ultimate aim of overturning the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and having poker declared a game of skill?
Recently, the PPA announced that it would be spending $3 million in its efforts to lobby Congress into overturning the UIGEA. But while nobody is saying that this is not a significant sum of money, one only has to look at the list of some of the true big spenders out there who set aside incredible sums of money to lobby the government to support their own causes.
Look at the US Chamber of Commerce, for example, a group that spends an incredible $92 million on its lobbying efforts.
Groups such as the American Medical Association, AARP and Exxon Corp all spend between $20 million and $30 million for lobbying, while the National Association of Realtors spends "only" $17,300,000.
Compared with these sums spent by the mega groups, the $3 million set aside by the Poker Players Alliance suddenly seems a little on the meager side.
Nevertheless, the Poker Players Alliance has a lot of members with a true passion to overturn a law that they see as unjust and unconstitutional. The group passionately supports politicians such as Barney Frank who uses his political clout to have the UIGEA questioned and - hopefully - changed in due course.
While the group lacks masses of money to push for change, and their enemy camp is certainly strong and active, many online poker players in the United States are still pinning their hopes on the efforts of the PPA - one of the country's most popular grassroots groups ever - to bring about change.
