US Online Poker Plan May be Added to Another Bill

December 13 - As the US heads into the final few weeks of the its Lame Duck Session in politics, last minute attempts are being made to pass bills that could see the legalization of online poker in the country.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's proposal to legalize online poker could be added to a spending package before the end of this year.

The idea is to add the proposal to legislation that absolutely has to pass, as the only way to get it through before 2011.

Reid earlier decided against adding the online poker bill to a compromise tax package out of fear that it would reduce the tax bill's chances of passing.

Reid's proposal will not only legalize online poker, it will also tax it, thus creating millions of dollars in revenue for the government.

Reid also said in a statement this week that the measure would protect the millions of online poker players who already take up this pastime over the internet.

"Experienced regulators already trusted by millions of Americans will maintain oversight and reputable operators with proven track records will provide a secure gaming environment for Americans," he said in his statement.

However, Reid's efforts have been slammed by a number of politicians, who call his attempts "secretive, closed-door and undemocratic".

Objections have been heard by at least three House Republicans: Spencer Bachus (Alabama), Dave Camp (Michigan) and Lamar Smith (Tennessee).

It should be noted that all three of these Republicans could have control over issues relating to online gambling when they take control of the House in January, following the results of the latest November elections.
