WCOOP Main Event Scandal Brewing At Poker Stars - 10-06-07
|
Author: Marc
October 6 - The WCOOP (World Championship Of Online Poker, for those of you not in the online poker know) Main Event, which was played last Sunday at Poker Stars, was an incredible tournament that attracted nearly 3000 players and paid out an incredible $1.4 million to the winner. But now there is talk of cheating and Stars has launched an investigation.
This would be a huge scandal and a blow to the reputation of online poker, but Poker Stars is well known for dealing swiftly and transparently in these matters, which will be good for the industry in general and the WCOOP in particular.
The winner of the Main Event was a player called "The V0id", and the first alarms were sounded when it was discovered that this player had never previously entered a Poker Stars tournament before. That was certainly a little suspicious considering the buy-in was substantial - not really the event you'd choose for feet-wetting now is it?
Then it transpired that a poker pro by the name of Mark Teltscher, who played in the event, used the same IP address as The V0id. The issue of multi-accounting, which is tantamount to cheating, became a very real possibility.
I have read on Poker King - a great website by the way for online poker news - that The V0id may have been Teltscher's sister. There is no law prohibiting family members in the same house from playing in a MTT event, but it could well be that the poker pro was at the helm of the winning account, and that would not be quite as kosher.
If Stars does find evidence of multi-accounting then the prize money will be redistributed and you can also bet that they'll make a public announcement regarding the matter - they're very good about that sort of thing, and it is much appreciated in the online poker community.
I'll keep you posted as and when this story concludes...
